Story one

Shabnam's journey of hope and determination

Shabnam (name changed)

Shabnam arrived at Aashiyana Children's Home with little more than a flicker of hope in her eyes. Born into an impoverished family, she had seen the harsh realities of life from an early age. Yet, despite the struggles she faced, there was always a spark of determination in her heart. The moment she stepped into Aashiyana, she knew this was the place where she could change her destiny.

At Aashiyana, Shabnam found not just shelter but also the encouragement she needed to dream big. The home became her sanctuary - a place where she was not judged by her past, but inspired to create a brighter future. With the nurturing support of her caregivers and rigorous educational programmes, Shabnam excelled academically and personally.

Today, Shabnam is studying for a Bachelor's in Nursing at a prestigious college in Dharwad, Karnataka. Her journey, once marked by uncertainty, is now one of promise and potential. Through resilience, education and the unwavering support of Aashiyana, Shabnam has transformed her life - proving that no matter the circumstances, dreams can indeed come true.

Story two

The story of four sisters: hope, resilience and gratitude

Mehak, Rubi, Riana & Sabina (names changed)

When their mother could no longer afford to give them the childhood they deserved, four young sisters found themselves in the loving care of Aashiyana Children's Home. Their mother, despite her struggles, wanted nothing more than to give her daughters a future full of opportunities. Realising she could no longer provide for them, she made the heart-wrenching decision to send them to Aashiyana - where they would not only be safe but also receive an education that would open doors to a better life.

While the sisters thrived in their new environment, their mother embarked on her own journey of self-reliance. She migrated to Kuwait, where she worked as a domestic help, determined to secure a stable future for her children. Despite the distance, she sent remittances home and kept her daughters in her thoughts, knowing they were growing up in an environment that nurtured their potential.

Over the years, Mehak and Rubi blossomed into young women. They received skill development training at Aashiyana, empowering them to be self-sufficient and confident. Today, both sisters are soon-to-be brides, ready to start their own journeys.

Rubi, now working in Kuwait, has not forgotten the home that helped shape her. With her first earnings overseas, she made a heartfelt contribution to Aashiyana - a beautiful gesture of gratitude to the place that gave her a chance at a better life.

Meanwhile, Riana and Sabina continue to pursue their education, carrying forward the dreams their mother once had for them. Each sister, in her own way, is determined to build a brighter future, fuelled by the lessons of love, sacrifice and resilience they learned at Aashiyana.

Together, they embody the incredible transformation that can happen when love, education and opportunity intersect. From a place of hardship, these four sisters have risen - and their success is a testament to the power of hope, hard work and the support of a community that believed in them.

Beyond individual stories

The impact across our community

Educational outcomes

Over the past decade, more than 100 children have successfully completed their schooling - either under the direct guidance of Aashiyana Children's Home, or through its efforts in promoting educational benefits - and have moved on to higher education or vocational training. Regular assessments indicate significant improvement in literacy and numeracy skills relative to government baselines.

Emotional & psychological development

Surveys and interviews with children and caregivers show marked improvement in emotional stability, self-esteem and social skills. Many children have developed healthy coping mechanisms, allowing them to overcome past adversities and move forward in life with confidence.

Community engagement

Aashiyana has become a respected part of the local community, with ongoing efforts to engage with neighbours, local organisations and government authorities to raise awareness about child welfare. Partnerships with local schools, healthcare providers and other NGOs have strengthened the resources available to the children we serve.

Alumni success

Several girls from our first batches have attained adulthood, married, and live happy lives with their spouses and in-laws within Goa and the neighbouring states of Karnataka and Maharashtra. Several others have gone on to pursue higher education and employment, becoming active contributors to society.

The honest truth

The challenges we still face

No amount of progress lets us forget the work still ahead. Honesty about our challenges helps us serve better, and helps donors understand exactly what their support is up against.

Social stigma

Children who come from backgrounds of abandonment or abuse may face societal stigma, which can affect their self-image and their reintegration into the community after leaving the home. Combatting this requires sustained advocacy and community education.

Mental health

Many children experience mental health challenges due to past trauma. While we provide regular counselling, there remains a need for more specialised mental health resources - child psychiatrists, trauma therapists and long-term clinical support.
